Is It Stupid If You Can Afford It?

“They cost how much!!!!????”

Lil’ Wayne was spotted at last month’s NBA All-Star Game with custom Beats by Dre headphones on his head. The headphones, which were made with 114 carats of diamond by Graff Diamonds, were worn courtside by the rapper with a value of over $1 million dollars. Yes, you read that right.

Now, why someone would wear headphones to an all-star game is beyond me, but maybe he likes listening to music in crowds. The average person would read this and say that “it’s the dumbest thing they’ve ever seen.” They would probably also say that “only an idiot would spend that much money on headphones.”

However, Lil’ Wayne is rumored to be worth roughly $85 million dollars, so will this $1 million hurt him? Only if he allows himself to fall into the same traps that an Allen Iverson (blew $200 million) or MC Hammer (lost $35 million) did when they threw away their bucks. Iverson played 15 seasons in the NBA and was rumored to never take luggage on road trips. His teammates have even said that he would buy a new wardrobe in every city and just leave everything he bought in the hotel room when they left. MC Hammer had a waterfall in his swimming pool on top of buying elaborate gifts for his dance team (Rolexes, cars, etc.)

Lil’ Wayne has been reported to own close to $4 million in vehicles and another $6 million in jewelry. That’s $10 million dollars out of $85 million. Does he own property? Does he have investments? Who knows? He’s rumored to be pretty smart with his money when it comes to making dollars from producing other rappers. Only time will tell if he goes broke or not.

Is it stupid if you can afford it?

  1. Random Girl says:

Stupid? Maybe. Excessive? Definitely. Unexpected? Not so much. When your income is based on image and being over the top is what sells your brand and gets you more press, maybe he just considers this another way to keep himself in the spotlight. He knows how to market himself, for better or worse.

  2. James says:

I think it's completely stupid and wasteful. Granted I don't have that kind ofoney to throw around but even if I did I know I'd be one of those individuals that invests long term and put my money into things that are worth while. It kinda baffles my mind how someone can have so much money and go broke lol

  3. Stupid? Yeah… BUT whether one can afford it is the line between stupid and insane, IMO. So while it may not be insane that he spent $1 mil on these headphones, it would be insane for me to spend $1000 on some shoes because that would actually hurt my pockets. And I completely agree with Random Girl's comment as well. Being over the top keeps your name in people's mouths, which is expected in the entertainment industry.

  4. My headphones cost me $40, and they're awesome. They are not, however, 1% of my total net worth.A mil for speakers? Maybe if I were a billionaire… And after your first 2 sentences, I kept thinking MC Hammer, MC Hammer… You nailed it with your comparisons!

  5. Vinny C says:

In answer to your question: HELL YEAH, IT"S STUPID! I always say that just because you can doesn’t mean that you should and that goes especially when it comes to having the means to buy a $1 million set of headphones. But who am I to judge. My headphones came free with my phone and, sadly, they represent about 1% of my net worth.

  6. You know, the really wealthy wouldn't have paid for the headphones. Jewelry and such are "on loan" in exchange for getting your picture taken in them. So if he actually bought them and buys things like that regularly, and buys them with his income as opposed to the interest earned off the investments of his income, well, it may not be wise — I would worry about a MC Hammer situation. But is it okay for him to be seen wearing them? Whatever floats his boat, man, whatever.

  7. Thank, Q says:

Exactly. And we don't even know if he truly owns those headphones. A lot of rappers rent items to appear wealthier than they are.

  8. Thank, Q says:

Yeah, it's amazing how people have millions and lose it. I think a lack of education contributes to that. Some don't understand taxes, saving and investing.

  9. Thank, Q says:

Yeah, $1000 for some kicks would not only hurt my pockets, it would hurt my head because my wife would slap me upside it.

  10. Thank, Q says:

Thank you, sir. My earbuds cost $9 on Amazon. They're compact and have decent bass. I'm good. A friend of mine said that he knows someone with Beats by Dre headphones and every time he goes to the gym, guys are watching him. They're waiting on him to put them down so they can snatch them.

  11. Thank, Q says:

LOL! Those who can do, I guess. If I could, I wouldn't. Sure, I'd spend money on nice things, but nothing that would make someone blog about me.

  12. G says:

There has got to be a level of decency and humility…hang on what am I saying he's a rapper.Yes it's stupid!

  13. Thank, Q says:

Good comment. Most of these rich people pay using their income and probably don't even know how to gain interest. A lot of rappers also accept lump sums of cash under the table which doesn't help either.
